OH MY GOD!! My dad bought himself a pearl reference today. i have to say this is the BEST sounding drum kit i have EVER heard. beautiful.
20x18 bass sounded mellow (coated heads) but focused, warm and LOUD. all the drums have this warmth and resonance to them. and the 20 ply snare is outstanding - also the best snare i have ever played.

Lawrence, the DW's are pretty Thick too. Mine are seriously Thick.
I was a bit apprehensive towards the Reference series, but you cheered it up a bit, Louie. My Local Drum Pusher is getting a set home soon'ish me thinks.

I know two fellow drummers here in Tampa who have the Reference series drums. They both love them and rightly so. I just played the demo kit at Guitar Center today and have to say that they DO sound good. Usually drums fresh out of the box in the shop don't have much depth and come standard with clear heads (which in my opinion are not always the most flattering for the drum), but these had coated ambassadors and some depth to them. The sales guy (Shaun) said he just took them right out of the box and that's how they sounded. Good stuff. With a couple weeks of tweeking and getting to know them I have no doubt that they would just sound incredible.
BUT: They are heavy as HELL! If you were driving those from gig to gig you'd notice your gas mileage going down......
Seriously, if you run into a kit at your local shop just grab the front bass drum hoop and try to pick it up. Wow......
One of my buddies got the kit with the snare and the other did not. I saw the one who did yesterday and he showed me the snare. Ridiculous-that's the word that came to mind. I personally have never seen a 20 ply snare. It also weighs something like 18 pounds he told me......
In other news: All of you should check out the new snare throwoffs on Pearl drums. Ingenious and really a great invention.
Also, the tilters on the newer cymbal stands are amazing.
If I wasn't playing a custom kit I'd probably go Pearl. After working in the drum retail business for years, dealing with the (Tama, Mapex, DW, Pearl) reps, calling all of those companies with issues, I HAVE to say: Pearl has the best customer service anywhere with 85% of the stands, snares, parts, pedals, etc IN STOCK and ready to ship.
They're really cool people who make a really great product.
That's my two cents.

I got my first double pedal when I was 16 (OMG, 17 years ago) and have not changed since....
VERY light and responsive. DW's.....too heavy. Tama I.C...same way. Pearl (today) pretty cool. Other days...eeaaahh......not as good as Yamaha.
Preferences man......we're all different....

i heard people moaning about the weight of them too but i dont think they are that heavy at all and they sound so good it really doesnt matter. for me its more important for gigging to keep the amount of drums down not the weight; unless something is super heavy of course, but these are not.
he chose a colour called twilight fade which is just gorgeous....like a very dark brown/black with the grain showing etc. i'll post a pic if i can.

pearl pedal feels v good but they fall apart. cant beat DW9000 for smoothness and stability. great gear.
Guys if you can read the extensive review I did after spending two weeks with the Reference Series drums...
